Doris H. Thomas, 94, died Tuesday, February 07, 2012 in Savannah, GA.
Mrs. Thomas was born in Dothan, AL on March 1, 1917, the daughter of the late John Hall and Maude Scott Harden. She received her formal education from the Georgia State College for Women and ultimately earned her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. She began her teaching career at Anderson Street Elementary School and later became the Principal of several Savannah schools including, Little White Bluff School, 38th Street Elementary, White Bluff Elementary and Windsor Forest Elementary. She later accepted the position of Assistant Director of Personnel for the Chatham County Board of Education and retired in 1979 as the Director of Staff Development.
Mrs. Thomas's professional and civic involvement included the Georgia Association of Educators of which she served as President in 1971-1972, the Georgia Association of Retired Teachers, G.A.E.S.P., AARP and Single Adults Living Triumphantly S.A.L.T. of which she was a founding member. She was also a member and life Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Savannah where she was active with the Friendship Bible Class and the Grace and Glory Mission Group.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Julian Lawrence Thomas. She is survived by her son, John Thomas and wife Sara of Savannah; granddaughters, Lawren Thomas of Acworth, GA and Christy Mackovets and husband D.J. of Marietta, GA; brothers, Frank Harden and wife Berit of Chevy Chase, MD and Robert Harden of Peachtree City, GA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Savannah with burial following at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
